Folks end up on our blog, all the time – wondering out loud to Google, “How do I make my employer give me a copy of my non-compete.”

Well, sad answer is you can’t.

That is why you should ask for a copy when you sign an agreement – always. New Rule of thumb. If your signature is on a document, and you are agreeing to terms of some contract – keep a copy.

Ok, now we are past that and you want to quit and see if you can compete. How do you ask for a copy now?

Approach 1 – “Boss, I recall signing some documents when I was hired. Might I have a copy so I know my rights and restrictions?”

Approach 2 – Quit, and wait and see if you get sued.

Approach 3 – Quit, compete – and wait for a copy that will be attached the lawsuit.

Clearly – approach 1 is worth a shot…
